From the President’s Chair – October 2013

SLA Europe DigiComms

There is a lot to report from across the SLA Europe Chapter since my last post two months ago. As we careen towards 2014 and Kate Arnold’s presidential year, SLA continues to develop its “beyond borders” strategy. This has seen a number of Chapter members invited to contribute to HQ activities resulting in some changes to our Board for 2014.  More details will follow on those in a separate post, but for now, to note, as you may have seen elsewhere, the most notable achievement.

This belongs to Bethan Ruddock, who was elected a Director of SLA. On behalf of the Chapter I would like to extend my congratulations and best wishes to Bethan in her new role in the SLA.  We are delighted that Bethan will continue to support our work in Europe as a member of the SLA Europe Board. The other important announcement is the appointment of Don Roll as SLA Europe President-Elect for the remainder of 2013; Don will then be our 2014 President. Don is a well-respected Europhile within the European information industry. He is Managing Director of Alacra’s EMEA operations and a long standing member and supporter of SLA Europe, including as a past member on our Events Committee. I am quite sure he will be an excellent President for 2014.  Don himself says,

I look forward to help continue the excellent work being done at SLA Europe. Watching the SLA become a truly global organisation with Kate’s and Bethan’s appointments has been great to see.  In the year ahead I will focus on ensuring the hard won recognition of SLA Europe within SLA globally continues in 2014.

One last announcement before I sign off now. Our recently announced meeting on December 4th will be in partnership with the ASLIB AKISS event. David Gurteen and Allan Foster will be combining their considerable knowledge and experience to deliver a Knowledge Cafe based on the findings of the BIR 2013 Business Information Survey. Sponsored by The New York Times and hosted by Norton Rose Fulbright LLP at their state of the art offices near London Bridge, this should be an excellent event to conclude another exciting year for SLA Europe. I hope to see you there.

All the best,

Stephen
