Tuesday 4th March – Do you have the facts on Wikipedia?

SLA Europe Events

Love it or hate it, as the sixth most visited website in the world Wikipedia is one source that researchers and information service professionals should not ignore.

This event is kindly sponsored by Springer and will feature Ally Crockford, Wikimedian in Residence at the National Library of Scotland, who will provide the real facts on Wikipedia. Introducing participants to the world of Wiki, she will explain how editors contribute and moderate content and on what basis we can trust the world’s largest online encyclopaedia, dispelling common myths and addressing concerns. Ally will talk about sources such as Wikimedia Commons, Creative Commons licensing for Wikimedia’s digital content, and the risks and benefits of working with Wikimedia personally and professionally.  She will also talk about her exciting role as Wikimedian in Residence at the Library and how she is keen to recruit further contributors to these resources.

This promised to be a fascinating event that offers the prospect of attendees gaining a deep insight into a key resource as well as an introduction to contributing to Wikipedia in a personal or professional capacity.

Ally took up the post of Wikimedian in Residence at the National Library of Scotland in July 2013, the first programme of its kind in Scotland and part of an attempt to lay the groundwork for a more open access policy at the NLS. Prior to this she worked with the University of Edinburgh and the Surgeons’ Hall Museum to organise an AHRC-funded series of collaborative public events. Ally graduated with a PhD in English Literature from the University of Edinburgh in 2012; in addition to her role at the NLS, Ally is the inaugural Susan Manning Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities in Edinburgh. Her academic research explores digital knowledge from a different perspective, creating an open-access web resource about Medicine in Literature.

The talk will be followed by drinks and nibbles kindly sponsored by Springer and an opportunity to network.  Please book via our online registration form.
