SLA Europe Webinar – Solid: An Ecology of Digital Being

SLA Europe DigiComms

SLA Europe was pleased to welcome Teodora Petkova to explore Solid, an exciting web decentralization project led by Professor Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web.

What if we could have all our digital artefacts and records in one place, a place of our own? Not scattered across platforms, or harvested by third-party machine applications? Imagine all our data living peacefully its private life, yet ready to enter any other public service, provided we need it to. That’s the aim of Solid, but the project is still in its infancy.

Solid “aims to radically change the way Web applications work today, resulting in true data ownership as well as improved privacy” with the project’s main goal to allow users to have full control of their own data, including access control and storage location.

As a philologist fascinated by how our networked lives are changing to the possibilities of the written word, Teodora showcased the impact Solid will have on our digital footprint, the concepts behind the project, its socio-technical implications, including implications for librarians and information professionals as ‘netizens’ (citizens of the internet).

SLA Europe’s recording of the webinar can also be viewed below and also on our YouTube channel. We would also like to ask members to please consider making a charitable donation to our chosen charity, Half Moon Young People’s Theatre.
